Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Training
Programme Overview
The Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Training is designed to prepare competent, professional teachers for the education and training system, as well as trainers for the industry. The training component of the programme is a unique feature, which distinguishes this programme from other similar programmes.
The programme offers a choice of one (1) of four (4) areas of specialization, namely – Business, Science, Information Technology (Kingston campus only), or Workforce Development. This programme is pedagogical in nature and therefore does not offer technical training in the specialization areas. As indicated, the focus is on the preparation of teachers and trainers for the areas of specialization. Core areas such as the Psychology and Principles of Teaching and Learning, Curriculum Development and Assessment; and supporting courses in areas such as IT, Research and Entrepreneurship are covered in the programme. In addition, the programme includes twelve (12) weeks of Teaching Practice. See the Programme Map and the Programme Structure (pages 12 and 13) for detailed listings of the courses offered.
This comprehensive 46-credit programme is designed to transform the learning experience of students by helping them to become engaged thinkers, active learners, knowledge constructors and global citizens who are able to participate fully in the society as teachers and trainers.
Minimum Entry Requirements
All interested applicants are required to have the minimum of a Bachelors degree in a relevant area.
The degree must be approved/accredited by a recognized accreditation body.
Specialization Areas
Students in this programme are placed in one of the following four specialization areas:
- Business
- Science
- Information Technology (Kingston campus only)
- Workforce Development
Program Learning Outcomes
Design and facilitate effective learning experiences for adolescents and adults.
Use effective and innovative approaches, strategies and instructional methodologies in different teaching/training contexts.
Develop appropriate instructional materials to support teaching/training intervention(s) in educational institutions/organizations.
Utilize current instructional technology to enhance the teaching/training and learning experience.
Employ entrepreneurial principles to create new products and services in Education and Training.
Demonstrate professionalism and integrity in decision making in teaching/training environments.
Possible Jobs Upon Completion
Upon completion of this programme graduates are eligible to be employed as:
- Teachers in secondary and post-secondary institutions.
- Trainers in the public or private sector.
